PANDIT NIKHIL BANERJEE Sitar

Ragas Bhimpalashi, Multani; Raga CD 211

I play this CD a lot. The late Nikhil Banerjee never faltered, in technique or taste; he was for decades (along with Vilayat Khan and Ravi Shankar) one of India's top sitarists. This 1970 concert, with Kanai Dutta on tabla, makes it clear why Banerjee's music was so esteemed. Deceptively simple at first hearing, his playing combined a sweet tone with a grand and dignified conception. These afternoon ragas are a joy; I'll still delight in them ten years from now. Music: stellar; Recording: very good; Production: very good.
